Weight loss

Weight loss will be most successful if you create a long-term plan with your doctor. A reasonable goal might be to begin making lifestyle changes by increasing physical activity and limiting calories.

  1. Changing eating habits.
For most adults, a low-calorie diet of 1200 to 1500 calories per day for women and 1500 to 1800 calories per day for men is recommended for weight loss.
  2. Increasing activity.
Physical activity helps you burn more calories. Do vigorous activity for at least 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week or more. Vigorous activity is equal to jogging, cycling at least 12 mph, cross-country skiing, or playing a basketball game.
  3. Weight loss pills.
Along with lifestyle changes, medicines may be options for some people. Usually prescription weight loss pills are approved for people with BMI (body mass index) of 27 and above.
  4. Surgical treatment.
Suitable only for selected patients with morbid obesity.
